Arsenal fans would have watched on with resignation as Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick during Manchester City’s 3-1 win at West Ham United on Saturday evening.

That’s back-to-back hat-tricks for the goal-scoring machine, he already has seven Premier League goals to his name and it’s not even the end of September.

Only hours earlier, Arsenal dropped points at home to Brighton in a game marred by controversy after Declan Rice was sent off.

Rice will miss Arsenal’s north London derby showdown against Tottenham after the international break, but he will be back for the trip to the Etihad.

Arsenal are two points behind the champions, and if they drop points at Spurs, and then proceed to lose at Manchester City, then the gap could already be seven and winter wouldn’t have kicked in yet.

But all of those are what could or couldn’t happen. What has happened is that Manchester City are two points ahead after their 100% to the new Premier League campaign and Haaland wasn’t too keen on the language used describing the London club.

Kelly Cates was interviewing the 24-year-old after his heroics against West Ham when she referenced the Arsenal game from earlier on in the day.

She rightfully pointed out that ‘Arsenal dropped points today’ because that was a match, especially on home soil, Mikel Arteta’s side were expecting and backing themselves to win.

But the veteran broadcaster then proceeded to claim that ‘one rival has already slipped up’, which Haaland didn’t take too kindly to.

The Premier League hitman urged Cates, daughter of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, to use her words carefully, as he told Sky Sports.

“Erling, you started off by saying that it’s important to get the win for the team,” said Cates. “It’s three wins from the first three games. Man City have looked fantastic already. Arsenal dropped points earlier on today, so one rival has already slipped up.

“Look, we are three games in. I know, I know, we are three games in,” added Cates after she watched Haaland react with a smirk on his face.

Haaland interrupted: “They haven’t slipped up yet. Don’t use these words, please.” To which the Sky presenter added: “Okay, they have dropped points already so far this season and Man City continuing with that 100% start.”

Manchester City and Arsenal Premier League title race

The issue Arsenal have is that Haaland is refreshed and looking stronger than ever. It needs to be noted that he, Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri all missed important games last season.

If that doesn’t happen again, and they start a large chunk, then you worry about how many points they can hit and even if 90 would be enough for those chasing them.

Arsenal narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season by registering an improved 89 points, yet it still wasn’t enough.

Usually, Manchester City start slowly and they don’t even seem to be doing that, which is, once again, a huge worry for anyone trying to win the league.
