Tottenham registered their first win of the new Premier League season when they breezed past Everton 4-0 on Saturday.

The returning Yves Bissouma, a Son Heung-min brace and a Cristian Romero header delighted Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss is now in his second season as manager and it’s clear as day as to what he wants from his team from back to front.

There are some teams, like Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and now Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who play with a calmness and they aren’t pressing from the front like the game depends on it.

Those in north London are the complete opposite because they are 100 miles per hour and they never take their foot off the accelerator.

At times, as proven during Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Leicester City, it can hurt them, but against Everton, they were at their best.

It should and could have been more, but one player who epitomises the way the team plays is the man with the armband.

After Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris left Spurs last summer, Postecoglou proceeded to hand the captaincy to probably the most popular player in the dressing room, Son.

Tim Sherwood expressed how he loves the ‘aggression’ Son showed without the ball during his side’s win over Everton.

The proof of that was when he chased down Jordan Pickford, forced him into a mistake, robbed the ball off him and duly put the ball into the back of the net to double his side’s lead.

Sherwood was critical of Pickford for what he did, but he made sure to give Son his flowers, as he told Premier League Productions (24/08/24 at 8:40 pm).

Son Heung-min leading from the front

“You know with Tottenham, you are going to get an aggressive press from the front players and none more so than Sonny,” said Sherwood.

“Look at his aggression. Pickford must know that there isn’t any time to take a touch out of your feet like that and he got what he deserved. And Sonny nicks it off it. It’s really, really poor from Pickford.”

Dominic Solanke’s injury

Solanke made his Tottenham debut at Leicester, then proceeded to get injured – he played every league game for Bournemouth last term.

That just proves that Spurs have no luck, but it meant that Son stepped into the number nine role and he could be leading the line for a while yet.

Tottenham fans will be hoping Solanke is back after the international break because it’s the small matter of the north London derby against Arsenal.

It’s going to be a huge September for the club because, added to Europa League matches, they travel to St James’ Park, take on Arsenal and also play Manchester United at Old Trafford.
