Harry Kane’s last game in the Premier League was scoring a brace against Leeds United at Elland Road on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

The Yorkshire club proceeded to drop into England’s second tier and they are yet to return after another drama-filled 12 months for the club.

Leeds’ play-off final loss to Southampton will still be stinging for the fans, but the team have started to pick up after a rocky opening few matches.

Meanwhile, it has been a mixed time for Kane. He joined Bayern Munich last summer, but somehow, the trophies continued to allude him, even though he broke even more goalscoring records.

On Tuesday night, Kane earned his 100th cap for England and he joins an elite list, including the likes of Wayne Rooney and Bobby Moore, as men who have repped their country that many times.

The Bayern Munich star netted a brace to celebrate after the Three Lions beat Finland, but Kane’s abject performance at Euro 2024 is still fresh in the minds of people.

A list of names were put forward to Troy Deeney as to who could replace Kane in the starting line-up for England, with some odd suggestions.

Jamie Vardy, who is 37 and has retired from national duty, was suggested after he helped Leicester City earn promotion back to the Premier League.

But Leeds’ struggling star Patrick Bamford was also put forward and Deeney was quick to shut all of this down, as he told talkSPORT (10/09/24 at 6:40 am).

He was keen to remind people that five years ago that could have been a debate, but not know, with Bamford unable to stay fit and help Leeds return to the Premier League, not even forgetting that he is 31.

Patrick Bamford tipped to replace Harry Kane

“I think he has forgotten five years have passed since those guys were being spoken about,” said Deeney.

“All very good players and all doing their thing. But to move England on from where they already are. I don’t think those guys are top of the list moving forward. If we were struggling, then give them a call, but not right now. I would be more inclined to give Ivan Toney a call.

“Pat Bamford, a lovely kid, but he can’t stay fit.”

Patrick Bamford’s England career

It was brief like Leeds’ return to the promised land. The £10 million star is on the one-cap band after he played a World Cup qualifier against Andorra.

Bamford didn’t feature again for his country, as he was battling Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins at the time.

Watkins has since gone from strength to strength, including helping Villa into the Champions League and scoring that semi-final goal against the Netherlands of Euro 2024.

It was a shame England proceeded to lose the final to Spain, but a lot of people put it down to the man who was in charge, as Gareth Southgate is now out of the door.
