» » » 'Interesting': Gary Lineker reacts to what he’s worryingly hearing about Chiesa at Liverpool

Liverpool didn’t do much transfer business this summer, but they still managed to get into the headlines.

Even though Chelsea spent like crazy, Manchester United backed the under-fire Erik ten Hag and several other teams broke their transfer record.

Liverpool sat in the corner, watching on, observing from afar and, in reality, bringing in only two senior players.

Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili arrived from Valencia, but he was loaned back, whist Liverpool completed a £12.5 million deal for Federico Chiesa from Juventus.

Many think that this is a bargain deal for the club and those in the Anfield boardroom are back to their best in securing these types of deals.

Liverpool outclassed Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday and the club’s new signing watched on from the stands.

Whilst many were singing the praises of the team for getting this deal done, what Gary Lineker is hearing about the versatile forward is rather worrying.

The former England striker stated that Serie A experts have cast their doubts on whether the Chiesa signing will work, even though it’s such a low fee.

Lineker pointed towards the 26-year-old’s drop in form since winning the European Championships with Italy and how injury has also played its part.

All of this was ‘interesting’ for the Match of the Day presenter, as he told The Rest is Football.

Will Federico Chiesa be a success at Liverpool?

“I saw a piece (on Chiesa) from James Horncastle, the Italian (football) specialist,” said Lineker. “He was saying that ‘he wasn’t so sure’. He said that ‘he had that amazing breakout season around the Euros in 2021’, and he had a fantastic season.

“But he says, since then, he has generally struggled. He wasn’t even the first choice for the Italian national team in what was a really poor Italian national team, so he says he isn’t particularly convinced.

“They haven’t paid a lot of money, either. He also said ‘why would Juventus let him go?’ Which was an interesting take. Yeah (he is normally right) and knows his stuff.”

Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool future

Whatever does or doesn’t happen to Chiesa, you don’t want him to be a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.

The 32-year-old did did what he does best and that’s run havoc on Manchester United at the weekend, with a goal and two assists.

But rather than his performances stealing the headlines, it’s Salah’s future at Liverpool that was talked about after he stated it’s his final year at the club.

Liverpool have to see sense and offer him a new deal because he can help Arne Slot replicate the success of Jurgen Klopp.
