Manchester United’s summer transfer plans look different these days — and that’s not a bad thing.

After years of trying to outthink the Premier League market, Ineos are now doing the simple thing: bringing in proven quality from within the league.

United have already ticked off one major signing, and more are likely to follow. This time, the focus is on players who have already shown they can deliver in England.

Matheus Cunha became the first through the door this week. United paid £62.5m for the Brazilian forward, who joins with two strong Premier League seasons under his belt. He also has some history with United.

The club saw his quality up close more than once and he wasn’t the only one to impress them from a distance.

Despite talks beginning to drag, United remain confident about signing Mbeumo, amid claims of Tottenham entering the race after Thomas Frank was appointed.

Mbeumo has faced United eight times for Brentford and scored once and assisted once. The goal came in 2022, when Mbeumo contributed to the 4-0 thumping, which ended Erik ten Hag’s time as United boss.

Mbeumo’s goal that day was Brentford’s fourth. It wasn’t one Shaw will want to remember. The Brentford forward breezed past him with pace and power before finishing calmly to cap off the rout.

That performance left a mark. Mbeumo’s profile has grown since then, and he’s now seen as one of the league’s most consistent wide forwards outside the “big six.”

It’s also worth noting that while Mbeumo has improved, Shaw’s form has gone in the opposite direction.

As United weigh up whether Mbeumo is worth pushing for, they don’t have to look far for evidence. Like Cunha, he’s already shown them what he can do.

Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United latest

A week ago, it looked like a deal for Mbeumo was close. United had one bid turned down and were preparing a second, with personal terms not expected to be an issue.

But in the days since, things have become quieter. And with Tottenham now in the mix, and Thomas Frank giving them a direct line to the player, United might start to feel the pressure.

Even so, the latest noises suggest Mbeumo is still waiting for United.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, the forward has already given his word to Manchester United and is waiting for the clubs to agree a fee. If those talks collapse, only then will he consider other options.

United will want to move quickly. The terms are clear, and Brentford are open to selling. The longer this drags on, the more chance there is for another club to jump in.
