Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United is becoming increasingly uncertain – despite recent reports suggesting there’s no rush to replace him.
It’s true that a new goalkeeper hasn’t been named among United’s top priorities, but fresh links and ongoing speculation around Andre Onana are beginning to tell another story.

United still aren’t planning to move on from Onana, but Ineos have nonetheless been weighing up alternatives. Their growing list of options seems to have expanded further over the past week.
United have been most heavily linked to Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, who is reportedly keen on a transfer. But despite the noise, there have been no signs of talks progressing.

Another long-standing rumour is Porto’s Diogo Costa, though his £64m price tag remains a significant barrier for now – even if he does have the potential to justify that value long term.
Ineos prefer Marco Carnesecchi to replace Onana
While those two names have dominated the headlines, it appears Ineos may have other plans. According to reports from Italy, Manchester United have identified Marco Carnesecchi as their preferred candidate to replace Onana if required.
Interest from Monaco has only intensified United’s need for a plan, and Carnesecchi has quickly become a frontrunner. United have reportedly already made contact with his representatives.
The goalkeeper is under contract with Atalanta until 2026, so a deal is unlikely to come cheap. However, talks over a move appear to be underway.
According to Tutto Mercato, United are prepared to offer £34m for the Italy international – though Atalanta are said to be holding out for £42m. It remains a short distance for the two sides to overcome.
Who is Marco Carnesecchi?
Carnesecchi stands 6ft 4in tall and has a commanding presence in the box – a quality United have missed at times. Last season, the 24-year-old emerged as one of Italy’s top keepers, saving 3.88 goals beyond expectation according to Bundesliga’s metrics.
With zero errors leading to goals, 98 saves, and a 74.3 per cent save success rate, Carnesecchi proved himself a steady pair of hands – something United desperately lacked at crucial moments through 2024/25.
