Heung-min Son’s status as Tottenham captain could soon come under the spotlight, with the club reportedly open to a significant offer for the South Korean star.

After lifting the Europa League trophy and securing a return to Champions League football, Tottenham Hotspur are heading into a pivotal summer.

Amid swirling speculation over Ange Postecoglou’s future, questions are now being asked about Heung-min Son, with reports by Sky Sports that the club could be open to entertain serious offers for their captain.

As the transfer window opens and Spurs are linked with several high-profile additions, attention is also turning to leadership within the squad and a handful of names are emerging as potential successors to the role.

Son’s future uncertain amid Saudi Pro League interest

The Tottenham veteran has been at the club for 10 years, and at 33 years old with only a year left on his contract, a move looks increasingly likely.

While Heung-min Son remains a fan favourite and one of the most respected figures in the dressing room, the club’s openness to a significant offer suggests a willingness to refresh its squad ahead of their Champions League campaign. The cash injection from selling Son would allow for some standout summer signings.

The South Korean international turned down a move to Saudi club Al Ittihad last summer for a reported fee of £51m, according to talkSPORT.

Now as a major target of the Saudi Pro League clubs, and with his contract winding down, this summer could mark the right moment for Son to make a move away from North London.

Leadership trio emerge as possible successors for the captaincy

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has emerged as a fan favourite and vocal on the field. His commanding presence and ability to organise the defence have led to calls from supporters for him to take on the role as captain.

Wearing the armband for the first time in Spurs’ Europa League fixture against Qarabağ, Vicario has been recognised for his organisational skills at the back. He is part of Ange Postecoglou’s designated ‘leadership group’ which is a core set of players trusted to set standards on and off the pitch.

Cristian Romero, who shares the role of vice-captain with James Maddison, has been a consistent presence in Tottenham’s defence. At 27 years old, he’s now a senior figure within the squad and arguably the most likely to step into the captaincy role should Son leave.

However, a move for Romero can’t be ruled out despite his status as one of the most important players in the Spurs squad. Atlético Madrid, according to the Daily Mail, are showing interest even at the reported price tag of £60m.

Since arriving from Leicester City, James Maddison has quickly established himself as one of Tottenham’s most influential figures. Sharing the vice-captaincy with Cristian Romero, he’s brought maturity and leadership to the midfield.

Though he missed the final stretch of the season with a minor knee injury in May, Maddison remains central to the club’s identity. Should he stay at Spurs this summer, he would be a strong candidate to take the armband and help guide the team into their Champions League return.
