A busy offseason for the Boston Celtics began with a blockbuster trade.

Boston sent Jrue Holiday to Portland in exchange for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks. The move surprised NBA fans and signalled the team’s openness to reshaping its roster.

According to reports, the Celtics are now exploring trade options for Kristaps Porzingis. Despite how well he fits on the court, the team needs to shed salary to avoid the second luxury tax apron and lessen their financial load.

Porzingis’ availability is a big question mark for interested teams. He missed significant time last year, playing in just 42 games, which adds to the concerns about his $30 million-per-year deal.

Still, he remains an intriguing target for many organisations. When healthy, Porzingis offers a rare blend of shot-blocking, floor spacing, and offensive versatility – all traits highly valued by contenders.

Several teams are weighing up the pros and cons of making a move for the 7-footer. Here are three possible landing spots for the former All-Star.

Golden State Warriors

The fit in Golden State is obvious. The Warriors have lacked a centre who can both stretch the floor and provide rim protection – two areas where Porzingis excels.

His three-point range would open up the team’s offence, while his shot-blocking could ease Draymond Green’s defensive responsibilities.

However, making the numbers work could be tricky. Golden State might need a third team to facilitate the deal, potentially offloading Jonathan Kuminga’s contract in the process. It would require multiple moving parts, but the on-court payoff could be worth the effort.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers could offer a very different opportunity for Porzingis. With LeBron James and Luka Doncic already in place, Los Angeles is firmly in win-now mode and looking to shore up their frontcourt.

Porzingis’ skill set fits what the Lakers need – a big who can shoot from deep, block shots, and play off their two stars.

A trade could be built around Rui Hachimura, and future pick swaps, giving the Celtics financial relief and future assets in return.

Utah Jazz

Utah was linked to Porzingis before he signed with Boston, reportedly offering more money had he opted out of his previous deal. Now, with Austin Ainge taking over as team president, there’s a direct line to the Celtics front office that could help facilitate discussions.

The Jazz are building around Lauri Markkanen and could use another frontcourt piece to round out their core. Porzingis, when healthy, would form a unique pairing with Markkanen, giving Utah a size and shooting advantage.

To match salaries, Utah could send expiring deals like those of Jordan Clarkson or John Collins, providing flexibility for both teams moving forward.

While health remains a question, Porzingis still offers enough upside for these teams to consider making a move – especially if the price drops closer to the season.
