Journalist Darren Lewis has spoken about the difference between Daniel Levy-run Tottenham Hotspur and their bitter rivals Arsenal when it comes to the transfer market.

The London-based journalist spoke about Arsenal’s transfer dealings, both in the summer and in January when they were on top, and how they showed that ambition Spurs fans and Antonio Conte want their club to show.

In the summer, after missing out on fourth spot to their bitter rivals, Edu Gaspar-led Arsenal dipped into the transfer market and signed Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City to reunite with Mikel Arteta on the training ground.

Then, when the Gunners were flying high in January, Leandro Trossard, who Louis Saha thinks Spurs will regret not signing, joined from Brighton, alongside Chelsea’s European Cup-winning midfielder, Jorginho.

Whilst one side of north London is enjoying one of its best seasons in a long time, on the other, it’s all doom and gloom, after Conte went on a verbal tirade at how Tottenham is being run after his side’s 3-3 draw at Southampton on Saturday.

Journalist Darren Lewis mentioned how, when Harry Redknapp was in charge of Spurs, he wanted players like Carlos Tevez, but he didn’t get his wish, and how that mindset of pushing in the transfer market, as Arsenal have done, still isn’t visible at Hotspur Way, as he told Premier League Productions (20/03/23 at 2:20 pm).

“If you compare Spurs, to say Arsenal,” said Lewis. “Arsenal spent big last summer on Zinchenko and Jesus, then they went again.

“When they saw that an early top-four brief turned into an opportunity to win the title, they went again. They wanted Mudryk, who would have cost a huge amount of money, but instead, they brought in Trossard. They wanted Caicedo, who would have cost a huge amount of money. But, instead, they brought in Jorginho. Those players have turned out to be excellent signings because they have added experience and depth to the side.

“Compare that to Spurs, go all the way to the top of that graphic when Harry Redknapp was in charge. A top-four bid turned into a potential title challenge. He wanted Tevez, Gary Cahill and Saha. You see the comments Conte is articulating, it goes way back beyond a decade.

“This is the reason why we are honing in one individual. But what he is saying and the problem right now is symptomatic of a number of managers. You can get rid of him. He will go to another club and win something. Spurs will be back here. We will be talking about this in two years time. Same story, different place.”

TOTTENHAM GOING BACKWARDS

The issue facing Spurs is that, whilst their rivals are probably going to become champions of England, they are going backwards.

That’s going to be a seriously bitter bill to swallow if it happens in May.

But, with or without Conte, with Daniel Levy set to make a decision on whether or not to sack him, it seems as though they are in a bit of a mess because Harry Kane’s future is another big worry for the club.

Without the England captain, you seriously dread to think where Spurs would be.
