Considering Julian Nagelsmann has been relentlessly linked with becoming the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, we think one of the players that could revive themselves under him is Son, and that too as a striker.
That is, of course if Nagelsmann makes his way down to N17 after Antonio Conte’s inevitable exit to work alongside the £22 million (Guardian) man.
Nagelsmann could favour an unorthodox striker at Tottenham
It’s no secret that the South Korean international has looked miles off his best this season, with Jamie O’Hara expressing his confusion over his staggering decline, while branding him as ‘awful.’
However, in our view, Julian Nagelsmann would the perfect manager for Tottenham legend Son Heung-min to return to his intimidating best and that too as a striker.
If anyone has followed Nagelsmann’s career so far, they would realise that he has a penchant for No.9’s that cannot actually be regarded as natural frontmen.
Or an extremely mobile striker in Timo Werner’s case, who was positionally fluid under his tutelage.
Considering Son Heung-min has thrived as a striker in Harry Kane’s absence in the past, he could do the same under Julian Nagelsmann at Tottenham.
And with Kane looking set to depart his boyhood club and his presence being virtually irreplaceable, there is only man Nagelsmann can and should look to for goals.
New role could eek out the limitations Son currently has and get the best out of his strengths
An aspect of Son’s game that has undergone a serious decline is his 1v1 ability as he seems almost incapable of beating defenders anymore on the left wink.
But what remains the biggest weapon in his artillery is his movement, as Son remains an expert at running in behind defences, which would be accentuated as striker and assist Nagelsmann, who would likely incorporate counter-attacking principles at Tottenham.
If Nagelsmann does give the 30-year-old the license to play up front, his inability to dribble past players will no longer be a requirement but instead, his standout features will shine, which include his aforementioned movement, scary pace and elite finishing.
Much like was the case during the 2021/2022 season where Son Heung-min was just an out-and-out goalscorer, the same could be the case with him under Julian Nagelsmann, if he is employed as Tottenham boss.
This move could well make the club icon one of the most lethal forwards in the world once again.
