Gary Lineker has praised Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane for overtaking the goal record set by Wayne Rooney to become the all-time top goalscorer for England against Italy.

The 29-year-old has been waiting patiently to break the record and while he could have done so against Les Bleus in style during the World Cup, he famously skied his second penalty of the game.

But Tottenham hitman Harry Kane redeemed himself in a way by delivering from the spot-kick against Italy this time around and breaking the England all-time goal record set by Wayne Rooney, which drew appreciation from Gary Lineker.

The £200,000-a-week [Sun] man always seemed destined to break the Manchester United legend’s record as he instantly rose to fame as one of the most clinical goalscorers in the world.

Even at international level, the Spurs talisman took home the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

As Harry Kane finally broke the goal record set by Wayne Rooney in an England shirt with 54 goals to his name against Italy, Gary Lineker sang his praises.

“Many congratulations to Harry Kane on becoming England’s highest ever goalscorer. A wonderful achievement”, he said on Twitter.

Harry Kane is a Three Lions legend

The Tottenham vice-captain’s status as a Premier League legend is cemented at this point, regardless of his lack of silverware.

However, many would argue against him being one for the Three Lions as he is not as prolific in his national team colours.

But as Gary Lineker pointed out, breaking the goal record set by Wayne Rooney to become the all-time goalscorer for England against Italy is an incredible accomplishment from Harry Kane.

Simply put, regardless of whether you regard Kane’s performances for his country as underwhelming, any player that holds the record he does is deserving of icon status.
