Michael Owen fears Liverpool will only sign Jude Bellingham this summer and not move to improve other areas of their team.
Owen was speaking to BT Sport after Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat away at Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
That result dumped Liverpool out of the Champions League with a 6-2 aggregate hammering.
Collapsing from 2-0 up in the first half to a 6-2 exit is very worrying for Liverpool and again highlighted the need for signings.
Liverpool clearly need to bolster their midfield this summer and Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham is a prime target.
Pundit and former Liverpool striker Owen has now offered his view, believing a deal for Bellingham could still happen despite the potential of missing out on the Champions League.
Owen does though fear that Liverpool may only be able to sign Bellingham and nobody else, with one signing taking up the whole budget.
“I know there is a kitty there to probably go for a Bellingham for £100million, maybe a little bit more,” said Owen. “But if they don’t get in the Champions League, then it’s going to put a little bit more pressure on the pursestrings.”
“I don’t believe that it’s right to just go and buy a load of players. I would try to burst the bank for Bellingham and I fear that that will be about it,” he added.
Liverpool absolutely need more than one signing, even if it’s Jude Bellingham
Liverpool have been chasing Bellingham for a while now and it seems pretty clear that he is the top target for the summer window.
The Dortmund star will cost at least £100million though and a host of other clubs – like Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid – are all keen on Bellingham.
This looks like a hugely difficult deal for Liverpool and the Reds can’t afford to just sign one player.
Liverpool need to add two, maybe even three midfielders this summer and another centre back should be on the wish list too.
If Calvin Ramsay isn’t ready to play as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s backup then another right back may even be needed too.
Liverpool may have to think about this long and hard; do they sign a truly elite talent in Bellingham and blow their budget, or look to bring two, three or four players at a similar price?
That’s a tough question and if Liverpool don’t qualify for the Champions League, it may be one that they will have to answer.
