Mitski fans have been searching for reasons as to why the Nobody singer isn’t performing at the Oscars despite her nomination.
This year’s Oscars takes place on Sunday, March 12 at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre. This has been the home of the Academy Awards ceremonies for over two decades now.
Sunday night sees the best and brightest stars in Hollywood descend upon the theatre with the hopes of swooping up the illustrious prizes on offer. But also in attendance are some of the music industry’s most famous faces.
The Best Song category this year sees the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Mitski go up against one another. As expected, the nominated artists are on site to attend – and perform – at the awards show. But where is Mitski?
Mitski fans wonder why singer isn’t performing at Oscars 2023
When this year’s Oscars nominees were announced, fans of singer-songwriter Mitski were over the moon to hear she was among those nominated. Mitski has received a nomination for Best Original Song for her work on Everything Everywhere All At Once track, This Is A Life. This gave fans the hope that Mitski would appear at the annual awards ceremony, either as a performer or a guest. However, in the lead up to the 95th Academy Awards, concern has been growing that Mitski would not attend at all.
This has since been confirmed, with Mitski not listed as a performer at the 2023 Oscars. Pitchfork went to Mitski’s representatives but were declined a comment on her absence. The singer has not yet given a reason as to why she will not perform.
This is quite a change from what was expected on the night. Bill Kramer, Academy CEO, spoke to Letterboxd last month about what to expect from the 95th Academy Awards. While he didn’t reveal any spoilers about the evening’s events, Kramer did hint that Mitski fans would likely be “very happy.“
“Gaga, Rihanna, David Byrne, they’re going to be on stage at the Oscars if this all works out. That is the plan,” Kramer said. “What we’ve seen so far—the set design, the red carpet, the lineup of presenters, this commitment to really digging into the disciplines of moviemaking… It’s going to be a really fantastic night.”
Stephanie Hsu will be performing instead of Mitski at the Oscars
In Mitski’s stead, David Byrne and Son Lux will be joined by Stephanie Hsu to perform This Is A Life. Stephanie Hsu was the star of Everything Everywhere All At Once, the film in which This Is A Life features. The 32-year-old actress is up for the Best Supporting Actress award as well, making it quite the night for her.
Hsu is a seasoned Broadway professional, meaning performing at the Oscars should be a breeze for the actress. She originated the theatrical roles of both Christine Canigula in Be More Chill and Karen the Computer in The SpongeBob Musical.
Best Original Song nominees will also be performing at the awards show
Stephanie Hsu, David Byrne, and Son Lux aren’t the only musicians performing at the Oscars. This year’s ceremony sees the Oscars stage graced with some major music stars as they descend upon the Dolby Theatre to perform their nominated tracks.
Here are all of the confirmed performers taking to the stage on Sunday night:
- Rihanna – Lift Me Up (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
- David Byrne, Son Lux, Stephanie Hsu – This Is A Life (Everything Everywhere All At Once)
- Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairavaprevious – Naatu Naatu (RRR)
- Sofia Carson and Diane Warren – Applause (Tell It Like A Woman)
Lady Gaga is also nominated for Best Original Song for her track Hold My Hand, heard in Top Gun: Maverick. “The singer had told producers she was planning on coming to the ceremony as a nominee, but she won’t have time to prepare a number because she’s shooting Joker: Folie à Deux,” Deadline reported.
