Gary Cahill says it was ‘baffling’ why Liverpool transfer target Mason Mount was left on the bench during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea legend stated that Mason Mount is a ‘very talented’ player, even though Graham Potter opted against using the playmaker as the struggling Blues were beaten by Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

Instead, the likes of Christian PulIsic, N’Golo Kante, Conor Gallagher and Noni Madueke were the players subbed on, as Chelsea fell into the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Take your pick. Who is having more of a morale-sapped season? Those at Stamford Bridge? Or Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool?

Well, the duo will meet on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge, as they try to claw some sort of confidence and life back into a season that’s heading towards pure disaster, more so for Chelsea than those on Merseyside.

Nonetheless, following Chelsea’s defeat to Villa, this is what Gary Cahill made of the call to leave Mount on the bench, as he told Premier League Productions (01/04/23 at 7:25 pm).

“Mason Mount is another baffling one,” said Cahill. “I am not sure why we didn’t see him. I am not sure what that situation is all about.

“But, for me, he’s a very talented player. A player where I feel like it’s an easy deal to be done, so it’s disappointing we didn’t see him.”

SHOULD MOUNT LEAVE CHELSEA?

Perhaps Potter didn’t use the England international because he has just returned from injury, but then what’s the point of having him on the bench?

Either way, there has been a lot of noise around the player in recent months, with Chelsea owner Todd Boehly determined to keep the player on board amid interest.

With contract talks stalling with Mount and the West London club, a number of Premier League clubs are lurking around the corner, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool having ‘significant conversations’ with the England international.
