Netflix’s latest Bridgerton instalment, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, is set to hit our screens on May 4 and focuses on the romance between Queen Charlotte and King George III, but is the story true?
Queen Charlotte, the matchmaker and monarch, features in the first two seasons of Bridgerton, and the fan-favorite now has her own prequel.
The six-part series will feature other characters that Bridgerton fans will recognise, such as Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton, mother of the Bridgerton children.
Is Queen Charlotte a Bridgerton Story true?
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is partly true. It is based on the life of Queen Charlotte of
Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who lived in England during the 18th century.As shown in the series, Queen Charlotte was married to King George III. In September 1761, the two wed, and their coronation was held later that month.
In the Netflix series, Queen Charlotte is portrayed as a Black woman. Although historians are not too sure of the real Queen Charlotte’s race, many people believe that she was biracial.
Born in Germany, Queen Charlotte descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, which was the Black branch of the Portuguese Royal House.
What do we know about the real Queen Charlotte?
Queen Charlotte had 15 children in real life, with 13 of them surviving until adulthood.
She was also very fond of animals and brought two Pomeranians with her when she moved to England. The dogs, named Phoebe and Mercury, can be seen in her royal portrait by Thomas Gainsborough.
Queen Charlotte died in November 1818 at age 74, over a year before her husband. She was buried at Windsor Castle in St George’s Chapel and is known as the longest-serving female consort in British history.
Who plays Queen Charlotte in the Netflix series?
In the series, there are two actresses who play Queen Charlotte. Golda Rosheuvel plays the older version of Queen Charlotte, who we have seen before in previous Bridgerton series.
Meanwhile, India Ria Amarteifio plays the young Queen Charlotte, who is newly married to King George III.
At the show’s premiere, Rosheuvel told the PA news agency: “For Queen Charlotte to be a fan favourite and then for Shonda Rhimes and Netflix to want to do a deeper dive into this character, it’s great. I feel very proud.”
Despite playing the same character, Rosheuvel and Amarteifio never filmed their scenes on the same day, as they had no scenes together other than the last one in episode six.
However, she feels that the younger Queen Charlotte actress did “an amazing job”.
