Rio Ferdinand has ripped into Cristian Stellini’s Tottenham Hotspur after their humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The Manchester United legend claimed that Tottenham, who sacked Antonio Conte in March, are in an ‘absolute state’, as he responded to brutal criticism of Eric Dier being ‘bang average’.
Tottenham went 5-0 down inside 20 minutes to their Champions League rivals, as Ferdinand reminded fans that Conte once said that Dier ‘could be a world-class centre-back’.
The Italian is known to be outspoken and to say some crazy things, well, that statement about Dier has to be up there.
The 29-year-old perhaps epitomises the mess Tottenham find themselves in and how he is a player that has outstayed his welcome and is no longer good enough.
Dier was part of England’s last squad, and it has to be questioned ‘why?’ Nonetheless, Ferdinand reacted to an afternoon to forget for Cristian Stellini’s men, as he told FIVE.
“I have just seen all the fans leaving the stadium 20 minutes in f’ing and blinding, going crazy, the Spurs fans,” said Ferdinand. “The club is in an absolute state. There are different clubs that are having problems.
“But Spurs man. No manager. An interim manager that doesn’t seem to be up for it. I couldn’t believe the way he had started that game. He has a brand-new right-back, who has struggled.
A fellow pundit then told Ferdinand: “I never got Dier. I think he is a proper bang average footballer. He seems to start all the time.”
Ferdinand responded: “Conte said when he went in there, after a couple of weeks, that he could be a world-class centre-back.”
DIER SHOULDN’T BE IN THE ENGLAND SQUAD
There were a number of performing English centre-backs that were left out of Gareth Southgate’s most-recent England squad, and given Dier’s form, you have to question ‘why?’.
Fikayo Tomori is one of them, the former Chelsea star helped AC Milan reach the Champions League semi-final last week after keeping one of Europe’s most dangerous attackers, Victor Osimhen, at bay.
Then there is the underappreciated Lewis Dunk at Brighton and the much-improved Tyrone Mings at Aston Villa, who has been transformed under Unai Emery and one of Villa’s best players this season.
