» » » "Exceptional": Mikel Arteta praises £96,000-a-week West Ham man

West Ham take on Arsenal at the London Stadium this Sunday with both sides fighting for vastly different objectives.

The Hammers are battling to stay in the Premier League as they sit just three points above the relegation zone, while the Gunners are firmly in a title race as they find themselves six points clear at the top.

Ahead of the clash in east London, Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on David Moyes.

What’s the story?

Well, Arteta played under Moyes for six years from 2005 to 2011.

The Spaniard made 209 appearances under the Scot – more than he amassed under any other manager throughout his career.

Over a decade on from when Arteta last worked alongside Moyes, he still thinks fondly of his old boss.

BBC Sport quote the 41-year-old as saying: “I think more than respect, it’s admiration. I would go through a brick wall for him when he was my manager. He’s a really good coach, exceptional at managing individuals and a man who honours his word. Someone that I learned a lot from.”

Very kind words indeed.

Despite West Ham’s situation, the £96,153-a-week Moyes will surely be pleased to read these comments.

It certainly makes us feel old to see Arteta go up against Moyes in the dugout, as the 59-year-old signed the Spaniard for Everton when he was just a fresh faced 22-year-old arriving from Real Sociedad.

Arsenal must bounce back against West Ham

Only Manchester City and their relentless nature can make a 2-2 draw at Anfield feel like a defeat.

That desmond on Merseyside cut Arsenal’s eight point lead down to six points, which – while it seems comfortable enough – is not filling fans with much confidence.

All it would take is a defeat on Sunday and a win for Manchester City against Leicester for the gap to end up at three points, which is not a situation anyone associated with Arsenal wants to be in.

Therefore, it is imperative that Arteta gets the Gunners back to winning ways.
