Shay Given says Hugo Lloris was left ‘surprised’ by Jacob Murphy after Newcastle United thumped Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 on Sunday.
After scoring two goals inside nine minutes, Jacob Murphy, who had opened the scoring inside a minute, proceeded to take a chance from long-range where he found the back of the net.
Hugo Lloris, who ended up going off at half-time because of injury, was caught watching the ball hit the back of the net and Shay Given felt that he could have, at least, attempted to dive.
If the game was still 0-0, then Murphy might have looked for a pass, but when you are 2-0 up in next to no time, then why not enjoy yourself?
Either way, whilst Eddie Howe’s Newcastle being 5-0 up after 20 minutes shocked the world, for Shay Given, the man in between Tottenham’s stick was caught off-guard by Murphy’s long-range effort, as he told Premier League Productions (23/04/23 at 2:55 pm).
“It’s a poor pass from Dier,” said Given. “Schar steps in and dispossesses him and it’s a brilliant finish from Murphy.
“If you watch Son, he goes into space, but Schar has got that space and Eddie Howe’s team are always on the front foot. They are always pressing high up.
“It looks like Lloris is caught surprised (by Murphy’s goal). What you would be disappointed with, from a goalkeeping point of view, is trying to save it and have a go.”
NEW LOW FOR TOTTENHAM…ANOTHER HIGH FOR NEWCASTLE
When Murphy struck that long-range effort, he had a look of pure shock and surprise on his face.
Whilst Newcastle wanted to come out of the traps, be aggressive and play like they were angry after being dealt with by Aston Villa the week before.
They never predicted to put Spurs to the sword in such a away that their fans were heading back to London after just 20 minutes.
