Rio Ferdinand has questioned why someone like Chelsea manager target, Mauricio Pochettino, would re-join Tottenham Hotspur after their 6-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Who is having a worse season? Spurs or Chelsea? The table clearly suggests that it’s the West London club, especially after their £600 million-odd spend over two transfer windows and current bottom-half-of-the-table standing.
Despite that, and the fact that they will miss out on Champions League football for next season, Chelsea are close to bringing Mauricio Pochettino to the club.
Tottenham fans are already annoyed, frustrated and angry after getting slapped 6-1 by Newcastle, who were remarkably enough, leading just 5-0 after 20 minutes.
Well, given how well-liked Pochettino is with their fans, and how the Tottenham faithful are crying out for forward-thinking football again, then it will hurt them if he does become Chelsea’s next boss.
Either way, from Pochettino to Burnley’s Championship-winning manager, Vincent Kompany and free-agent, Julian Nagelsmann, it was questioned by Ferdinand why any of them would join, as he told FIVE.
“Spurs are in a bad place,” said Ferdinand. “We look at Chelsea. Are they in a bad place?
“Would you want to go and manage that, when you look at that pool of players? Would you want to take that over? They are talking about Kompany. They are talking about Nagelsmann. They are talking about Pochettino maybe going back.”
TOTTENHAM AND CHELSEA SHAMBLES
The only positive for Chelsea at the weekend was the fact that they didn’t play, with two FA Cup semi-finals taking place at Wembley.
But they will probably add to their shambolic season when they take on Thomas Frank’s Brentford on Wednesday night.
The Bees are five points ahead of 11th-placed Chelsea, albeit they have played a game extra, but for that gap to be a possible 11 points by the end of next week would be beyond embarrassing.
