Mikel Arteta admits that Arsenal must now win all five of their remaining games to stand a chance of winning the Premier League title.
The Gunners were given a lesson on Wednesday night as they were convincingly beaten 4-1 at Manchester City.
Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones had City 2-0 up by the break before De Bruyne added number three.
Rob Holding did pull one back for City but Erling Haaland did what he does best and found the net late on.
That takes City just two points behind Arsenal with two games in hand on the Gunners.
Many are already crowning City as Premier League champions after Wednesday’s big win.
This isn’t over yet though; City have to jam seven Premier League games into the coming weeks whereas Arsenal only have five.
City also have a massive Champions League semi-final clash with Real Madrid, adding more games to the legs of Pep Guardiola’s star men.
It’s reasonable to suggest that City could have a slip-up or two in the coming weeks, but Arsenal need to be perfect.
Mikel Arteta comments on Arsenal’s Premier League title chances
We can’t get away from the fact that this was a huge disappointment for Arsenal.
Even getting out with a draw would have been fine for Arsenal, but the truth is that they were never really in the game.
City were too good and this was maybe an example of the leap Arsenal have taken.
Arsenal finished fifth last year so to make the jump into the title race is pretty incredible.
That will be no comfort right now but Arsenal are just short of City’s level right now.
Mikel Arteta seemingly realises the task ahead of Arsenal now.
Speaking to Football London after Wednesday’s defeat, Arteta simply said ‘I think so’ when asked if Arsenal now need to win all of their remaining games to stand a chance of winning the title.
That would take Arsenal to 90 points, which would still allow City to drop three points and take top spot.
Arsenal still have to play Chelsea, Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and Wolves in a potentially tricky end to the season.
Arteta knows it’s an uphill task now but just has to get his side winning again after four without a victory.
