Mauricio Pochettino could reportedly look to bring his one-time Tottenham Hotspur target Achraf Hakimi to the Premier League at last if he succeeds Graham Potter at Chelsea.
While the futures of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar are very much up in the air heading into what could be a hectic summer of ins and outs at Paris Saint-Germain, it is far from certain that Hakimi will be sticking around in the French capital either.
A £35 million signing from Inter Milan in 2021, Hakimi remains one of PSG’s most sellable assets. TEAMtalk believe that a familiar face could come calling too; Pochettino having lifted the Ligue 1 title alongside the one-time Real Madrid youngster last year.
Before sharing a dressing room with Hakimi at the Parc des Princes, Pochettino had hoped to lure the Morocco international to Tottenham. Presumably, with the hope of filling a Kyle Walker-shaped void on the right-hand side.
Six years on from Walker’s departure, Spurs still haven’t found a full-back of equal quality. Pedro Porro, the latest big-money addition, endured another torrid afternoon during Sunday’s 6-1 hammering at Newcastle United.
Pochettino wanted Achraf Hakimi at Tottenham Hotspur
“Achraf is a young player (I have) been following since Tottenham,” Pochettino said back in 2021. “We were on the edge of signing him for Tottenham. But then he went to play for Dortmund (on loan in 2018).”
“He has a great capacity to run. His physical potential is huge. He is young, he’s maturing at the defensive level, but he makes a lot of contributions in attack.”
According to TEAMtalk, PSG are willing to listen to offers for Hakimi this summer. Then again, Chelsea do already have Reece James at their disposal. Furthermore, Malo Gusto is set to arrive from Lyon during the summer transfer window.
One assumes that, if their interest in Hakimi is real, that would see Gusto return to Lyon for another loan spell. James, meanwhile, saw an already injury-hit season brought to a premature conclusion on Tuesday.
Hakimi was one of Morocco’s stand-out stars as the Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals of the Qatar World Cup. PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe, meanwhile, believes he is the ‘best right-back in the world’.
