Chelsea won’t block Mateo Kovacic from leaving the club this summer amid claims Liverpool are interested in signing him.
The Blues are expected to offload a number of players this summer as they look to trim numbers after Todd Boehly’s spending spree.
Kovacic could be one of them and the London Evening Standard claim that Chelsea won’t stand in his way.
It’s suggested that Chelsea will allow Kovacic to go if he wants to leave this summer.
Kovacic has just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea seemingly don’t plan to give him another one.
This summer may be the ideal time for Chelsea to sell Kovacic, bringing in some cash before he leaves for nothing.
That will be of real interest to a number of Premier League clubs, with Liverpool surely one of them…
Liverpool are interested in Mateo Kovacic
The Reds need to overhaul their midfield this summer and Kovacic appears to be one of many targets on the Anfield radar.
TEAMtalk report that Kovacic’s agents were assessing his market in March and were impressed with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United keen.
The rumour advanced this weekend as 90Min claimed that Liverpool are now expected to hold talks with Kovacic’s representatives over a potential move.
It seems that Liverpool hold a very real interested in signing the Croatian to bolster their engine room.
Kovacic isn’t quite the athletic, box-to-box threat that Jude Bellingham possesses but he is a quality technician who can pick out a pass and work in tight areas.
The 28-year-old is also Premier League proven and would be able to slot into Liverpool’s midfield without needing a huge settling in period.
Hailed as ‘incredible’ by West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, Kovacic can certainly help provide the injection of energy Liverpool really need.
Kovacic may not be a long-term solution but if Chelsea’s price tag is reasonable – and you would imagine it will be given his contract situation – he may be the man for Liverpool.
