West Ham United are considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso as they weigh up replacing David Moyes this summer.
The Hammers beat Bournemouth 4-0 in the Premier League this afternoon, pushing them another step closer to Premier League survival.
Moyes will be delighted with a big three points but the questions over his future continue with a parting of the ways expected this summer.
West Ham are now being linked with other managers and Bayer Leverkusen’s Alonso is a target according to The Sun.
It’s suggested that Alonso is now a ‘strong contender’ to become the next West Ham boss.
The report claims that key West Ham decision-makers have become well-aware of the hype surrounding Alonso’s career as a coach.
The Spaniard is now a real target for West Ham but whether they can actually temp him to East London remains to be seen.
Xabi Alonso to West Ham feels like a pipe dream
We can’t blame the Hammers for having a bit of ambition but Alonso seems unlikely to join.
The 41-year-old has worked wonders as Leverkusen boss following his shock appointment in October 2022.
Alonso has guided Leverkusen up the Bundesliga table and into the Europa League semi-finals.
The world appears to be at Alonso’s feet as a coach and he has made a stunning start as a top-level coach having previously been in charge of Real Sociedad B.
This ultimately means that Alonso will surely only leave Leverkusen for the absolute right job.
West Ham may not be that right now, having regressed this season and spent much of the campaign at the wrong end of the table.
The Hammers aren’t the only ones to have spotted Alonso’s potential either.
The Guardian reported earlier this month that Chelsea have ‘admiration’ for Alonso even if he may not land their job this time around.
It’s just hard to see Alonso jumping into the West Ham job this summer and the links to Lille boss Paulo Fonseca seem to make much more sense.
