Tottenham target Ivan Toney has been praised by Dion Dublin for what he did in the Premier League earlier today.

What’s the story?

Well – according to Tim Sherwood – Spurs are expected to make a move for the England international this summer.

The 54-year-old told MatchDay Extra: “They will do well to keep hold of Toney. Everyone will come in to try and get him. I think Tottenham will look to get him.”

Now – if that is true – Tottenham will probably be even more keen to sign the Brentford No.17 after today.

The 27-year-old showed real courage to step up and take another penalty in the 46th minute, just moments after seeing Nick Pope save his first effort from 12 yards.

Dion Dublin – who was covering the game on BBC’s Final Score – praised Toney for his bravery, specifically highlighting how the Tottenham target stuck to his guns and went the same way, albeit with a slightly higher shot.

Dublin said: “Ivan Toney is a brave footballer, he is brave in how he takes his penalties. The penalty is more or less exactly the same except it’s a yard higher. To do that is brave.”

It was the 27-year-old’s 18th Premier League goal in what has been a remarkable campaign for both the £5m man and Brentford so far.

Toney should not be a priority for Tottenham

In our view, Tottenham have other areas in need of strengthening before they even think about signing another striker.

For example, the centre-back department is very weak, aside from Cristian Romero.

Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez, Clement Lenglet and Ben Davies could all be upgraded on.

Spurs could also do with another goalkeeper as Hugo Lloris enters a decline, while the midfield department also has room for improvement. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is one player who arguably shouldn’t play every available minute.

With Harry Kane at the club, Spurs do not need to focus on signing a new striker – only if the England captain leaves should a deal for Toney be seriously pursued.
