Tottenham could soon beat Newcastle to the signing of Piero Hincapie if a rumour coming from Spurs is true.
Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports claimed that the north Londoners and the Magpies are both keen to sign the Ecuador international this summer.
So, what is the rumour? Let’s take a look…
What’s the story?
Well – according to De Telegraaf – Tottenham have now made Xabi Alonso their No.1 target to replace Antonio Conte.
The Spaniard actually works alongside Hincapie at Bayer Leverkusen, and the pair seem to have a strong relationship.
Alonso recently told Bayer Leverkusen’s official website that the South American is a “great player” who helps the German side tremendously.
The 41-year-old said: “I think he’s a very modern defender. He can play in different positions. He’s served us as a full-back in recent games, but has also been the left centre-back when we’ve played with a back three.
“He’s aggressive, is making better decisions when he has the ball, backs himself more to play diagonal passes and get in behind. It motivates me to have a player with his potential and desire because he helps you and you help him. He’s a great player.”
Clearly, Alonso seems to adore Hincapie.
Therefore, if it comes down to a bidding war between Tottenham and Newcastle this summer, and Alonso finds himself in charge of Spurs, his presence in N17 could prove to be a key factor in Hincapie’s decision.
Tottenham or Newcastle could get a bargain
Whoever wins the race for the 21-year-old’s signature could get themselves a bargain.
Tutto Mercato Web believe Bayer Leverkusen want just £26.5m for their No.3 this summer, which is a very small sum given his vast potential and current ability.
Nevertheless, that will be music to the ears of Tottenham and Newcastle as they both attempt to sign one of the most precocious defenders in Europe.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen this summer.
