Mikel Arteta has praised Newcastle United fans due to the incredible atmosphere they generate at St James’ Park.
The Gunners travelled up to Tyneside on Sunday afternoon with some demons from last year’s trip to Newcastle.
Arsenal infamously collapsed against Newcastle last season and threw away their Champions League hopes with a defeat.
Arsenal had to try and exorcise those demons on Sunday and they did just that with a very professional performance.
Martin Odegaard rifled Arsenal in front from range after a rather shaky start from the Gunners.
Fabian Schar’s own goal handed Arsenal a crucial second goal, securing all three points for Arteta’s side.
Arsenal are taking this title fight with Manchester City as far as they can, with today’s win another sign of their progress.
Mikel Arteta hails Newcastle fans
It would have been easy for Arsenal to collapse again today.
The Newcastle fans created a raucous atmosphere and were so loud, especially in the early stages.
Newcastle had a penalty decision overturned early on and it felt like Arsenal really kicked on after that moment.
Magpies supporters stayed with their team and made it a fairly volatile atmosphere, as they often do in the big games.
We have seen Arsenal falter in situations like this before, such as that defeat to Newcastle last season.
This time though, Arsenal weren’t fazed and secured all three points in a strong performance.
Arteta moved to praise Newcastle fans after the final whistle, telling Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie that the atmosphere at St James’ Park is just ‘incredible’.
That’s certainly a verdict many Premier League managers would echo with Newcastle fans some of the loudest in the top flight.
The Spaniard will be ecstatic with how his players dealt with today’s game – and will look to use this as an example moving forward.
