Laura Woods is excited by the prospect of Arsenal securing a deal to sign Manchester City captain, Ilkay Gundogan.
The Arsenal fan and talkSPORT host added that it would be ‘some signing’ if the five-time Premier League title winner swapped the colours of Manchester City for Arsenal in the summer, as she told the Breakfast Show (23/05/23 at 6:55 am).
There is a strong chance it could happen because
Ilkay Gundogan’s current contract at the Etihad expires in the summer and there is talk of him re-uniting with Mikel Arteta. The 32-year-old still has a lot to deal with before he can think of what he’s going to do for the next leg of his trophy-winning journey.
But if he decides to leave Manchester City this summer, then he might just bow out in the most incredible of fashions because Pep Guardiola’s side are two games away from winning the treble.
Yes, Arsenal secured the signatures of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko last summer, and they helped the Gunners push for the Premier League title, but as Laura Wood explained, the capture of Gundogan would just take the club up another level.
“Listen, could that happen, if it did, my goodness,” said Arsenal fan Woods. “WOW. That would be some signing.
“He’s out-of-contract. He has just lifted his fifth Premier League title. He was Pep’s first signing in 2016 as well. 32 years of age, sometimes I think that number could be a little deceiving, especially when you pass 30 and people start to go ‘oh’.
“But Gundogan is some player – if Arsenal manage to get him, how cool would that be?! You know what you are going to get with him as well, which is experience. Calm head. Know-how. He has done it five times as a Premier League winner.
“He is somebody who knows how to take a team into the latter stages of a season and keep their calm, which is something that Arsenal miss.”
XHAKA TO LEAVE ARSENAL… AND PARTEY?
Arsenal host Wolves on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday and it could mark the end of the road for some players.
There is strong talk that Granit Xhaka will be headed back to Germany, which Arsenal fans have now known about for some while now, so that isn’t a surprise.
But there are also suggestions that Thomas Partey could follow suit, if that’s the case, then it’s going to be very interesting what Arteta does with his midfield in the summer because there might just be some big changes.
