Roberto De Zerbi now wants Weston McKennie at Brighton – after Leeds rejected the chance to sign him on a permanent basis.
That is according to Calciomercato in Italy, who claim that the Seagulls are looking at the United States international to replace Moises Caicedo, despite his struggles at Leeds.
As Weston McKennie could be playing European football next season while Leeds potentially end up in the Championship, let’s take a look at the strange situation.
What’s the story?
Well, the American has not exactly set the world alight at Elland Road following his loan move from Juventus in January.
McKennie has tasted victory in just three of his 17 Premier League games for Leeds, and was recently involved in some controversy when a close friend criticised others at Elland Road, and bizarrely claimed that putting in effort wasn’t really the 24-year-old’s style.

Leeds agreed an option to buy the Texas-born midfielder from Juventus for £31m in the summer, although Calciomercato believe the Whites will not trigger that clause.
Surprisingly, Brighton seem interested in taking McKennie away from Turin on a permanent basis.
The Italian news outlet believe Juventus are willing to let the Seagulls sign McKennie for €25m (£22m).
Leeds could be embarrassed if McKennie shines at Brighton
If McKennie goes on to be a success at Brighton under De Zerbi, it would suggest something is wrong with the coaching at Leeds.
The American has failed to show anything to suggest he is worth £31m during his time in Yorkshire so far.
However, should Brighton get a tune out of McKennie, it would leave the rest of the footballing world staring at Leeds, questioning why they couldn’t do the same with a player who boasts Champions League and World Cup experience.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen in the transfer market this summer.
