Snapchat users noticed a red dot on the notification icon for their chats or messages and the changed color hasn’t appealed to them so much.
Snapchat has rolled out a number of features in the past couple of months alone, with its My AI topping them all. Some users are trying to find out via its artificial intelligence feature about the random red dot on the chat icon in 2023 it seems, unable to make any sense of it.
Any active user of the multimedia app would have gotten used to seeing its signature icons and the different colors they are distinguished by since its inception. So, people are itching to know – why is there a red dot on my Snapchat notification?

Snapchat users notice red dot on the chat notification icon
It isn’t clear if the new option has been rolled out to all users, but some of them noted a red dot is appearing on their message notification icon, which is usually blue when a chat remains unopened.
The message icon used to be blue for an unread Chat and on opening, it would only show a blue outline with a white body.
However, the previous color appears to have disappeared for some, with only a red dot appearing on a Chat notification with a black outline.
The red dot will disappear when a certain Chat is left at “read”.
Users want the blue design back
Avid Snapchat users prefer the old blue notification icon better than the latest one, as they are urging the app to get rid of the red dot, which also resembles a typical Instagram notification.
Sharing the screenshot of the new notification icon, one user said: “Why is my notification thing on Snapchat red instead of blue now? Please get rid of it.”
Another added: “Snapchat making the notifications red just feels so weird”
“Pretty sure it’s impossible to clear your red Snapchat notification bubble from the app icon,” shared a third user.
One user urged the platform to “please change it back to blue” as “Red just looks wrong”
What do the icons on the Chat screen mean?
There are three distinct icons that represent Chat notifications on Snapchat.
- Blue message icon – You have an unread Chat.
- Message icon with a blue outline – Your Chat has been viewed.
- Message icon with a gray outline – A Snap or Chat is pending and may have expired.
It remains to be seen if the guide on Snapchat’s official blog for its various icons will replace the blue message notification with the red dot which has started to appear for some users.
