Callum Wilson has spoken about his verbal exchange with Granit Xhaka during Newcastle United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday at St James’ Park.
The Newcastle striker started the encounter and claimed that Mikel Arteta’s side had a ‘clear tactic’ of players going down on a regular basis and how ‘every one of their players went down at one point’ to stop their momentum.
One of them included the no-nonsense Granit Xhaka, who ended up having a bit of a coming together with Callum Wilson during the match.
Nothing serious happened, in regards to no melee erupting or any red cards, but it was a cagey game, nonetheless, on the backdrop of an aggressive St James’ Park crowd that was baying for Arsenal’s blood at every moment.
It was hitting boiling point when Xhaka went down with an injury and a number of Newcastle players weren’t happy with his time wasting.
Wilson shared that he told the former club captain to ‘get up’ as he smiled on the floor holding his groin, but instead, he got some verbals back, as he told The Footballer’s Football Show.
“He has sat down with his groin (injury) and he is smiling away like there is nothing even wrong with him,” said Wilson.
“I am like ‘get up’. He is obviously just wasting time. I think every one of their players went down at some point and got the physio on. And got up after a couple of minutes of delay.
“They obviously come with that clear tactic. When you are the home team trying to get momentum in the game, it frustrates you.
“Then you are trying to pick him up and he starts talking. You know what it’s like. You are from the streets, you don’t allow people to talk to you like that. I am like, off the pitch, people don’t talk like this to me, so I am not going to allow it on the pitch.”

The dark arts of the game. If you are at the end of it, then those on the other side absolutely hate it.
If your team is pulling it off week in and week out, then it certainly helps you to a few extra points, which the Magpies have been doing this season.
But Newcastle got a taste of their own medicine because Arsenal played them at their own game.
