Tony Cascarino says if David Moyes’ West Ham United sign Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, then it would be an ‘amazing coup’ for the club.
With Declan Rice heading for the exit door, there is talk that West Ham want to replace their club captain with Fulham’s hard-hitting machine, Joao Palhinha.
The 27-year-old joined Fulham last summer from Sporting Lisbon, following their promotion to the Premier League, and for Cascarino, he has been ‘outstanding’, as he told talkSPORT.
Nobody in the Premier League made more tackles this term, as Fulham, who have previously yo-yo’ed up and down the leagues, secured a very comfortable top-half finish.
One of their star men was Palhinha in the middle of the park and it would hurt them if they were to lose him already.
Cascarino questioned if Marco Silva’s side can ‘fight that transfer off’, as he backed a possible move from happening.
“It would be an amazing coup for West Ham,” said Cascarino. “When he came, and I had seen a bit of him before in European football.
“He is a great ball winner. His game is really simple. He would just get it, move it and then move on. In some ways, a bit like Declan Rice.
“He has got a lot of stature about him and he is also capable of nipping in with a goal now and again. He has been outstanding for Fulham this season. I have seen him three times live and I have come away thinking ‘oh, what a bargain Fulham have got there’.
“Can Fulham fight that transfer off? I am sure there will be trying everything they can to keep him at that football club.”
Palhinha would be a top signing
In terms of profile, he isn’t far off Rice, who has seemingly agreed to join Arsenal, so that’s a plus for the West Ham faithful.
The issue they are going to face is other clubs will know they will have a serious wad of cash once they let Rice go.
So, from that perspective, Fulham could demand an inflated fee for their player and what makes matters worse is that he doesn’t have a release clause in his contract despite previous claims.
