Tony Cascarino has offered an interesting insight into Aston Villa’s decision to sign Youri Tielemans on a free transfer following his departure from Leicester City.
The former Aston Villa striker accepts that Youri Tielemans is a ‘talent’ and he also has the ability to score goals from the middle of the park.
But there are worries from Cascarino, and that’s the Belgium international ‘looking off from his very best’ from a physical standpoint, as he told talkSPORT.
Whilst large proportions of Villa fans were delighted with this signing, it’s fair to say those at the King Power Stadium had a different response.
They were relegated for a reason and Tielemans was part of it, with claims from fans that he had his flip-flops on as his contract was running down and they were sliding down the table.
Perhaps it’s something for the Villa Park faithful to take into account, as Cascarino shared his thoughts.
“I am convinced Unai Emery knows exactly his role in the team and it feels like he would be a great addition to the Villa,” said Cascarino.
“But he is a player that I have sometimes seen that hasn’t been at his physical peeks. Where I have gone ‘he just looks off his very best’, and I mean physically.
“There is a talent there and there is a goalscoring midfielder there, without a doubt.”
Tielemans with and without the ball
Unai Emery is trying to make Villa a more possession-based team and that’s something that Tielemans can elevate because of his skill set with the ball.
It could be argued that he becomes Villa’s best passer now and then there is the delight of looking forward to watching him score a few worldies.
But it’s without the ball that is going to be most worrying. He isn’t exactly reliable and defensively he can switch off, so it’s going to be interesting to see how all of this pans out.
