As the search for the Titanic-bound submarine by OceanGate that went missing four days ago continues, people have come to believe a supposed report running with CNN’s banner that claims the vessel has been “found empty”.

The rescue operations for five people on the submarine are underway, with the oxygen supply expected to last until Thursday morning. Despite unidentified sounds and unconfirmed “banging” sounds, experts are dreading the worst-case scenario – the submarine imploding underwater, a terrifying process well-explained in videos on TikTok.

Among the Titanic tourists was the British billionaire Hamish Harding, who is a part of the International Society of Adventurers, which Jeff Bezos, Buzz Aldrin, and Josh Gates are also a part of.

Fact Check: Did CNN report the missing submarine was ‘found empty’?

No, CNN did not publish any news story claiming the missing submarine had been “found empty”. The rumor stems from a Facebook post, which has been debunked by other outlets.

An article titled “Missing OceanGate Submarine Found Empty” has been spreading a lot of misinformation under the name of the American media outlet.

The screenshot of the fabricated news consists of a vessel belonging to OceanGate, placed on display with its door open to give a glimpse of the inside, which is empty.

The fake story also falsely names the co-founder of the company that led the expedition to the Titanic wreckage.

Therefore, we urge you not to share the above information or encourage social media posts lacking a fact check.

What does the false story claim?

The screenshot of the alleged CNN story begins with the outright false claim: “According to the co-founder of Oceangate, the submarine has been found but the passengers were no longer in the submarine.”

Not only has the co-founder of OceanGate been incorrectly identified as Wendy Rush, which isn’t true, but it also goes on to make another false claim about the condition of the “empty submarine” when it was “found.”

“The submarine was bolted from the outside making it impossible for the passengers to exit the submarine, almost as if they vanished,” it claims.

As per the latest updates, the missing vessel hasn’t been found and the Coast Guard estimates the submarine will run out of “breathable air” around 5 to 6 A.M. on Thursday.

Experts dread the worst-case scenario

Experts have expressed different concerns about the missing submarine and the passengers onboard. One of the most discussed possibilities with respect OceanGate’s vessel is the chance of it imploding at the given depth due to the pressure underwater.

Dr. Gallo, a senior adviser with RMS Titanic Inc, told Sky News, something could have gone wrong midwater.

Gallo said: “If they weren’t there (at the wreck) that means something had to happen mid-water that caused them to lose power or radio communications.”

And, Dr.Jeff Karson, a professor emeritus of earth and environmental sciences at Syracuse University, expressed he was “worried that there are bogus sounds out there and sounds that are inadvertently drawing the search away from the area that needs to be investigated.”
