The NBA is a league of stars and in the 2023 NBA Finals most of the attention will be on Nikola Jokic and Jimmy Butler. Butler is the superstar of the Miami Heat, and was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP against the Celtics.
However, in that series, it was arguably Caleb Martin who was the real Heat hero. The 27-year-old forward averaged 19.3 points, and 6.4 rebounds, while shooting 49 percent from beyond the arc. His 135 points against Boston was the most points an undrafted players has scored in a Conference Finals since 1967.
What we know about Caleb Martin’s parents including their father
Caleb Martin was born in Mocksville, North Carolina, on 28 September 1995. His twin brother, Cody, plays for the Charlotte Hornets and was drafted in 2019, and he also has an older brother called Raheem.
Caleb and Cody Martin’s parents include mother Jenny Bennett, who raised her children as a single mother. Caleb’s father abandoned him and his brother when they were young. Caleb and Cody are biracial – their mother is white and their father, whose name is reportedly Tyrone Martin, is Black.
The twins’ had a difficult upbringing
The Martin twins had a tough upbringing and were brought up in a 300-square-foot trailer in Cooleemee, N.C., a town with a population of just over 900. Their young mother would raise them alone while working every day from 2am to 4pm.
“Our mother often didn’t eat dinner, saying she wasn’t hungry. Then we realized that it was an excuse to give us more food,” Caleb explained.
“From my childhood I remember the ants in the sugar bowls, the cockroaches in the bathroom, and the white crosses the Ku Klux Klan burned in front of our trailer, which threatened us because we were black kids with a white mother.
“But thanks to her, we didn’t pay much attention to these things and spent our afternoons playing basketball.”
“I know it might sound cliché and corny, but she’s our hero,” Caleb added.
Is Caleb Martin related to Kenyon Martin?
In the modern NBA there are a number of former players whose sons play in the league. Given his latest performances, fans wanted to know if Caleb Martin is related to Kenyon Martin.
However, they are unrelated.
Kenyon Martin was selected first overall in the 2000 NBA Draft and had a fifteen-year playing career that saw him become an All-Star.
Kenyon Martin does have an NBA son, though – Kenyon Martin Jr, who was selected 52nd overall by the Sacramento Kings in 2020.
He is also unrelated to Caleb and Cody.
