Craig Burley says he is ‘now worried’ for Brighton and Hove Albion after Alexis Mac Allister’s transfer to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and how Moises Caicedo can follow suit by going to Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea.
The former Chelsea played added on ESPN that Brighton’s recruitment over the years has been ‘tremendous’ as they continue to buy cheap and unknown players, then sell them to the so-called bigger clubs for big sums.
Alexis Mac Allister is a prime example, he was brought in from Argentinos Juniors back in 2019, and very, very few knew about him, yet fast forward to the present and he is now a World Cup winner after securing a £35 million transfer to one of the biggest clubs in England, Liverpool.
That’s some journey for the 24-year-old, whose midfield partner in crime, Moises Caicedo, could follow suit if he joins Chelsea this summer, it has been claimed that he wants to move to Stamford Bridge.
These players were huge in Brighton’s success this season, which saw them reach Europe for the first time in their history, despite losing their manager and top scorer midway through the campaign.
Nonetheless, with Liverpool and Chelsea sticking their chest out in the transfer market, Burley expressed his ‘worry’ for the clubs they are taking players from.
“I am now worried, for my other favourite team, Brighton and Hove Albion,” said Burley. “Mac Allister has gone. Caicedo could leave. I am sure there will be people sniffing around Estupinan.
“Brighton’s recruitment over the last few years has been tremendous. Can they continue that, bearing in mind, they have an excellent young manager that they have brought in and you wouldn’t want to pull the rug from under his feet, would you?!”
Can Brighton push forward again?
Of course, Caicedo is still a Brighton player, but many feel it’s only a matter of time before he, just like Mac Allister gets his move this summer.
For how long can Brighton continue to take these hits? There might just be a point where it becomes too much and they are possibly dragged into a relegation dogfight.
Either way, they have set the bar seriously, seriously high next season because they have to produce out-of-this-world performances to top their European finish from this term.
