Real Madrid have released striker Mariano Diaz but Leeds United’s hopes of signing him may have disappeared.

The Whites splashed the cash on a new striker in January as Georginio Rutter arrived, but the less said about that deal, the better.

Patrick Bamford’s goal have dried up and that may leave Leeds needing a new striker this summer.

One name thought to be on the radar was Mariano Diaz.

Defensa Central reported in April that Leeds were interested in luring Mariano to Elland Road.

Victor Orta was regularly keeping tabs on the Spanish market and Mariano seemingly popped up on the radar.

Leeds may now be interested to know that Mariano is available – but whether they can actually sign him is another matter.

Real Madrid release Leeds United target Mariano Diaz

This has been a big weekend for departures at Real Madrid.

Marco Asensio has said goodbye to Real Madrid as he prepares to join Paris Saint-Germain whilst Eden Hazard has had his contract ripped up.

Karim Benzema also appears to be on his way out with a move to Saudi Arabia seemingly on the cards.

Lost in all of that news is the departure of Mariano, who will now leave Real at the end of his contract this summer.

The 29-year-old joined Real as a teenager and was incredibly prolific in the Real Madrid C and B teams.

After just eight La Liga appearances for Real, Mariano was sold to Lyon in 2017.

The Dominican Republic striker smashed 21 goals in 48 games for the Ligue 1 side, immediately earning himself a return to Real.

That move didn’t quite go to plan, with Mariano managing just 12 goals in 84 games since his return to the Spanish capital.

Mariano will now become a free agent after just nine league appearances this season and first-team football will be vital in his next move.

Still, a move to Leeds seems tricky; first of all, the Whites have suffered relegation to the Championship and luring a recent Real Madrid striker may be difficult.

Then there is the fact that Victor Orta has now left the club and it’s unclear whether Leeds still hold an interest in Mariano.

Maybe this is one that Leeds still explore, but we doubt a move to Elland Road will materialise.
