Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool appear to be losing the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Both Liverpool and Manchester City want to sign Mateo Kovacic from Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
90min reported on April 22 that Liverpool and City are keen on the Croatia international and were set to hold talks with the midfielder’s agents.
In early May, journalist Dean Jones reported in GiveMeSport that City’s interest in the £150,000-a-week (SalarySport) star “is genuine”.
And it now seems that Premier League champions City are pressing ahead with their pursuit of the 29-year-old midfielder and are now likely to agree personal terms with him.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Kovacic is really close to agreeing personal terms with City.
City and Chelsea will soon open direct talks over a new deal, according to Romano, who has added that the former Real Madrid player will leave the Blues.
Romano wrote: “More on Mateo Kovacic and Manchester City news revealed yesterday. Been told the agreement on the personal terms between Kovacic and City is really close, almost completed. #MCFC
“Man City and Chelsea will be in direct contact to discuss the fee. Kovacic will leave.”

Liverpool need midfielders for next season and beyond and will be aiming to challenge for the Premier League title in the coming years.
City have won the Premier League title yet again this season, and it seems that they are going to strengthen their already strong midfield department.
The gap between Liverpool and City is only going to get bigger if Kovacic makes the move to the Etihad Stadium.
Now, of course, Liverpool have been strongly linked with Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, but Kovacic is more experienced and is also at the top of his game at the moment.
