Aston Villa have held talks to sign soon-to-be departing Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after securing a deal for the free-transfer of Youri Tielemans.
One thing is for sure, Youri Tielemans is through the doors, after Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship coincided with his contract running out at the King Power Stadium and then landing on Aston Villa’s doorstep.
But, when it comes to free-transfers, it doesn’t seem as though the Midlands side are stopping there because talkSPORT report that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could follow after holding talks with the club.
Although, this was debunked by Midlands reporter Gregg Evans from The Athletic, who claimed on Twitter that Villa are ‘not close to signing’ the 29-year-old.
Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Liverpool in 2017 from Arsenal, but during his time at the club, he has failed to hit the heights and struggled with continual injury problems.
Prior to his Anfield exit, which will be official in July when his contract is up, Jurgen Klopp labelled the Southampton academy product a ‘legend’ and someone who was ‘unlucky in moments with bad injuries in absolutely the wrong moment’, as posted by the Daily Mail.
Would Villa fans be happy to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain?
There are certain players who have clouds over their heads and teams below the elite are reluctant to sign. Oxlade-Chamberlain is one of them.
He has played for an elite side, but in truth, it hasn’t worked out for him, so it then becomes off-putting for those trying to reach the top to accept such signings because there is just a negative mindset towards that player.
But in Villa and Oxlade-Chamberlain’s case, it’s probably different because of one man – Unai Emery.
These underperforming and struggling players are the type he gets the best out of, so if it’s good enough for him, then it should be more than good enough for the Villa fan because he has more than enough credit in the bank.
