Stevie Nicol has called Liverpool’s call to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion for a transfer fee of ‘£35 million’ as ‘unbelievable’.
The Liverpool legend thinks this early capture from his former side pushes the ‘needle forward’ in regards to the team wanting to compete for the Premier League title again.
This season was a pure and utter mess, but this Alexis Mac Allister deal, before the 2023 summer transfer window can officially open, has certainly lifted the mood around Merseyside, including with Nicol, as he shared on ESPN.
You would think that Brighton would have added World Cup tax, Premier League tax, big-club-trying-to-sign-our-players-tax and European tax on Mac Allister’s shoulders.
But none of that has seemingly happened with a £35 million deal agreed, although, it seems as though there was a clause in the Argentina midfielder’s contract.
Either way, that’s one new face through the doors and Nicol approves of it all, especially the price tag.
“It’s unbelievable that Liverpool can go and get a player of this quality for £35 million,” said Nicol. “If it was £135m, it changes the expectations. No question.
“But to get a player of this quality for £35 million. It’s absolutely fantastic.
“It’s not enough (to win the title), but it moves the needle forward in the right direction. But they need another one – that forward line is dynamite.
“His stats for closing the ball down and winning the ball back are tremendous. You stick that on top of what he does naturally with the ball at his feet. Fantastic.”
Does Mac Allister start for Liverpool?
A number of midfielders will depart Anfield next month. Both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has now been linked to Aston Villa, will leave upon the expiry of their contract.
Added to that, James Milner is out of the door and 32-year-old Jordan Henderson is getting any younger.
So, it should open a lot of doors for Mac Allister to either start from the get-go, or within the first few games because his energy and drive in the middle of the park is needed.
