Denny McCarthy and Viktor Hovland finished 7-under par at the 2023 Memorial Tournament. However, after a playoff round, Hovland came through to claim the biggest win of his professional career.
It is Hovland’s fourth win on the PGA Tour. He became the first Norwegian to win on the PGA Tour at the 2020 Puerto Rico Open and followed that up with wins at the 2020 and 2021 Mayakoba Golf Classic.
His highest ranking is third while his best finish at a major came earlier this year at the PGA Championship when he finished T2.
McCarthy’s previous best finish at the Memorial Tournament was in 2022 when he finished T5. He only has one other career victory to his name, the 2018 Web.com Tour Championship. Since joining the PGA Tour in 2015 he has had two third-place finishes and 18 top-10 finishes.
2023 Memorial prize money breakdown
The Memorial will offer up a total of $20 million to the golfers who made the cut. Players who finish inside the top 36 will get a six figure payday while those inside the top 11 will get more than $500,000.
The winner will claim $3.6 million for himself, which is more than Brooks Koepka’s $3.15 million at the PGA Championship and Jon Rahm’s $3.24 million check from the Masters.

With Hovland’s prize money at $3.6m, his caddie will earn around 10% of that – so around $360,000 – plus his base salary for working this weekend.
