Russia has been facing an internal crisis after Wagner mercenary group launched its attack on June 24, but why is the group called Wagner?

Ukraine and Russia war has been going on since February 2022 and continues to take place in 2023. However, in a shocking incident, it was reported that the Russian group Wagner attacked the Russian military.

Why is the Wagner group called Wagner?

As per reports, the group was named after the nickname of its first commander, Dmitry Utkin who was a retired lieutenant colonel of Russian special forces in the military.

The group was created by Prigozhin back in 2014 and since then has been operating in Syria, Mali, the Central African Republic, and more.

It is a private military company that was operating with Russia amid the war. The group played a major role to capture Ukraine’s Bakhmut.

The US designated Wagner as a transnational criminal organization back in January.

Why is Wagner attacking Russia?

The tension between Wagner and the Russian military grew after Prigozhin claimed that the military attacked his troops. He reportedly claimed that there were missile attacks on his camps.

He went on to further add that the Russian military was responsible for the deaths of his 2000 soldiers.

In a series of audios that were released by Prigozhin, he warned the military about their actions. He said: “Those who destroyed our lads, who destroyed the lives of many tens of thousands of Russian soldiers, will be punished. I ask that no one offer resistance.”

Elon Musk commented on the recent incident

Wagner attacking Russia became the talk of the town on social media with Twitter CEO Elon Musk also weighing in on what was happening.

He was quick to share a meme regarding the same where two identical people were seen and a Russian flag was placed over them. The text read: “Trust nobody, not even yourself.”

It did not take long for people to comment on the same as the tweet has now gone viral.
