Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou believes midfielder Tanguy Ndombele is a ‘very talented footballer’.

Tanguy Ndombele may be given a chance to save his Tottenham career under new boss Ange Postecoglou.

The Frenchman was a marquee signing for Tottenham back in the summer of 2019.

Spurs forked out £55million plus add-ons to sign Ndombele from Lyon.

Ndombele had excelled as a ball-carrying midfielder and seemed ideal to replace Mousa Dembele in the Spurs midfield.

Ndombele has shown flashes in a Tottenham shirt but working with Jose Mourinho was a marriage destined to fail.

Spurs loaned Ndombele to Napoli last summer after a spell back with Lyon, and he won the Serie A title.

Now back with Tottenham, Ndombele is expected to leave – but Postecoglou could give him a chance.

Ange Postecoglou offers chance to Tanguy Ndombele

New Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou held his first press conference since completing his move to Spurs.

Ndombele’s future unsurprisingly came up and Postecoglou offered some praise for the 26-year-old.

Postecoglou told Football London that Ndombele has looked good in training and is working very hard right now.

The Australian added that Ndombele is a ‘very talented footballer’ and is happy to have him at Tottenham.

However, Postecoglou couldn’t guarantee that Ndombele will stay at Tottenham though, believing that he may decide he wants to leave this new Spurs direction.

“Yeah, Tanguy has been good. He is working hard at training, to be fair they all are, they have got no option. Again, I take things as I see them. For me, he is obviously a very talented footballer, he was part of team that won Serie A last year and within that context, I am pleased to have him here and part of the group. What that means long-term, again I will not get into the definite of that because a lot of that will depend on how the team shapes up and how he shapes up,” said Postecoglou.

“He may decide this is not for him. I’m not sure. Like I said, the group I have had in so far have been really good at embracing the change of direction, the way we are doing things. As I said, once we get all the other guys in, it will be great to see how everyone measures up and decisions will be made moving forward from there over who will be involved and who won’t,” he added.

This is Ndombele’s last chance at Tottenham

Spurs have brought in James Maddison as a playmaker and Yves Bissouma could take the holding role in Postecoglou’s 4-3-3 setup.

Rodrigo Bentancur seems ideal for the other midfield role, roaming on the ball, picking passes and getting forward where possible.

The Uruguayan is out injured though and that opens up a chance for another Spurs midfielder to take his place.

Ndombele could feasibly play that role but the key is that Postecoglou demands intensity and plenty of pressing from his players.

Ndombele hasn’t shown the ability to play at that intensity consistently and that could hold him back from a key role at Spurs.

There are still two years left on Ndombele’s deal but if he doesn’t suit Postecoglou’s approach this summer, he will surely be on his way out soon enough.
