The popular Aerovia cable car in Guayaquil, Ecuador, has been in the news thanks to a video of a rather rowdy couple of passengers…

For the people of Ecuador, the Aerovia Guayaquil cable car is a convenient, scenic way to travel between Guayaquil and Durán. According to viral footage that has emerged this week, however, one couple appears to have mistaken their cabin for a bedroom, despite multiple warnings from the Aerovia security team.

They did what in a cable car?!

The Aerovia is one of Ecuador’s leading sustainability developments, and promotes an environmentally friendly way for locals and tourists to travel.

Venturing over a nearby body of water in a 17-minute journey, passengers can typically expect rather picturesque views. But on one fateful day in mid-June, those riding the cable car were treated to a rather x-rated eyeful from a neighboring carriage.

The goal of the Aerovia was to reduce car usage between the two populated areas, and the passengers in question certainly appeared to be making the most of the hand-free travel experience, using their time in the air to get rather intimate with one another.

Footage of this incident has of course been uploaded to social media, and in one clip the pair appear to be seen ‘re-dressing’ after their aerial escapades.

Couple were nonplussed by Aerovia Guayaquil security warning

The bizarre cable car story is made even stranger by the fact that video footage appeared to contain a rather stern warning from the Aerovia security team, that went unacknowledged by the passionate travellers.

According to the local press, the following statement could be heard ringing around the occupied cabin: “Users of cabin 117, I remind you that you are being monitored by security cameras, at the next station you will be disembarked by security personnel.”

Despite the threat of prosecution, the couple remained unperturbed, and appeared to continue getting to know one another in front of an audience of fellow public transport users.

At the end of the video of them getting dressed, it looks like they both made eye contact with the cable car’s security camera for a brief moment, though neither of them appeared too concerned.

Ecuador press predicts possible ramifications for mile-high stunt

It is unclear what happened to the couple once they disembarked from each other – sorry, from the cable car, but one Portuguese news site has delved into the possible legal penalties the couple may face.

According to the site’s research, Ecuadorian legislation does not dictate that sexual activity in public places is a crime, so it is likely that the couple has not had to face charges.

Citizens can be charged for doing the deed publically in certain municipalities based on their local rules, but Guayaquil does not class sexual activity in public as a violation of its local laws.

So while they may not be welcome back on the Aerovia Guayaquil, there’s a good chance that the enthusiastic couple is walking free right now. That being said, if you’re planning a visit to the cable car, it’s probably best to steer clear of cabin 117.
