Herculez Gomez says West Ham United transfer target Edson Alvarez is being ‘held hostage’ after the Ajax star’s transfer to Borussia Dortmund collapsed.

It seems as though the German club offered an ‘irresponsible amount of money’ for the 25-year-old midfielder and he could yet stay, unless the right offer is put on the table.

West Ham have expressed interest in Edson Alvarez ahead of Declan Rice’s exit, perhaps they could offer the money Ajax want, either way, for Gomez, the defensive-minded midfielder needs to ‘leave now’, as he told ESPN.

Whilst Rice is set to leave the London Stadium, the players that are set to replace the England international haven’t arrived yet.

The Hammers might find that the doors they knock on might end up asking for a few more million for their players because of the cash they know the East London club will have in their locker.

But as Alvarez won’t be joining Dortmund now, it will be interesting to see if West Ham pounce, as Futbol Americas pundit Gomez shared his thoughts on the Mexican star.

“I feel for Edson, he will be 26 in October, the time to leave is now,” said Gomez. “A few transfer windows ago, it was Chelsea of the Premier League, who offered £50 million for him.

“He’s a great player, for my money, the best defensive midfielder in CONCACAF. It’s an insane amount of money. You said, one of those reports said ‘it was an irresponsible amount (that Dortmund offered to Ajax)’

“Edson Alvarez right now, he choose this path. By what I mean, if you don’t want it, then don’t re-sign – you are almost in a sense held hostage. I don’t want to say this is on Edson, but what else could he do here? It’s not Ajax ruining his career.”

Alvarez needs to leave Ajax

Following the departure of Erik ten Hag to Manchester United, the Dutch giants have hit a few stumbling blocks, including missing out on Champions League football last season.

That puts Ajax in a difficult situation and if they have players that have the ability to go to the next level, then they should open that door for them.

West Ham in Europe would be a great place for Alvarez’s next chapter, but it could be argued going to Dortmund, who are in the Champions League, would be better, although, that seems off the table now, so will the Irons make their move?
