Jay Bothroyd has backed Reiss Nelson to play an ‘important’ role for Arsenal ahead of the forthcoming campaign after only starting once in the Premier League in 2022/23.
The former Arsenal academy product shared that he ’spoke’ to the 23-year-old and he is ‘very hungry’ to prove his worth under Mikel Arteta.
Playing a back-up role to the thriving Bukayo Saka isn’t easy, but Bothroyd added that Arteta believes in Reiss Nelson and has told him ‘we want you to be here’, as he told Sky Sports.
That was proven by the Premier League titles chasers handing the Hale-End star a new contract up until 2027.
Of course, fans will remember Nelson for that quite stunning late winner against Bournemouth last season.
And now he has committed his future to the club, they will be hoping for more magic, with Bothroyd sharing his thoughts.
“Reiss Nelson, he came in and done really well,” said Bothroyd. “I know, when you talk about the attacking side, you want to bring someone in that’s a top, top player.
“But you can’t always do that. When you have Saka there that is the first name on the teamsheet, then someone like Reiss Nelson is a good option.
“He could play right-back, right-wing and left-wing. I think he is a very good option.
“I spoke to him recently, he has signed his new contract. He is very hungry. Arteta has said to him, ‘we want you to be here. We want you to be part of the squad’. They have Champions League football. He will be important to the squad.”
Nelson becomes even more important now
Last season, Arsenal were in the Europa League and they got knocked out of the domestic competitions early.
It allowed Arteta to play his strongest XI possible in the Premier League, without much rotation, but it’s going to be a different story altogether this forthcoming season.
The simple reason being there will be more pressure on the players, and tougher games, which then brings the squad players into action a lot more and this is where Nelson now needs to prove his worth.
