Tim Howard says the Premier League is seeing ‘the best’ of Unai Emery at Aston Villa after it ‘didn’t work out’ for him at Arsenal.
The 51-year-old took charge of an Aston Villa side hovering above the Premier League’s relegation zone in November following the mess left by Steven Gerrard.
Whilst just leading the Midlands side back to normality would have been accepted, Unai Emery worked his magic and guided them to Europe, with former Manchester United and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard lauding his ‘impressive’ efforts in such a short space of time, as he told Sky Sports PL Summer Series (24/07/23).
It needs to be remembered that when Emery was at Arsenal, he directly replaced Arsene Wenger and that was never going to be easy for anyone.
And whilst he spent, he wasn’t given anywhere near the backing Arteta has been provided since he replaced the former PSG, Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal coach.
Either way, on either side of his reign at Arsenal, everything else has worked out for the thriving coach.
“It’s no surprise,” said Howard. “He’s a very, very good manager. It didn’t work out for him at Arsenal.
“But, I tell you what, we are seeing the best of him. Unai Emery and Aston Villa, it’s exciting to watch.
“How he has got this Villa team so true and so organised over such a short space of time is impressive. That’s why they call him the professor.”
Can Emery guide Villa to the Champions League?
Fifth place will get you into the Champions League next season and Villa will be aiming for that ahead of the new campaign.
Of course, if they win the Europa Conference League and finish outside of the top ten, for example, then that would also be accepted by the fans because it would mean Europa League football next term and a trophy.
But the hope is that, with Emery being backed in the transfer market, they can use that to cause havoc near the top of the Premier League ahead of the forthcoming campaign.
