Stevie Nicol fired back at his fellow colleague for criticising the qualities of Jordan Henderson as the Liverpool captain has a big-money offer on the table from Saudi Arabia.

European football expert and French journalist Julien Laurens claimed that he ‘isn’t a fan’ of the 33-year-old and there is ‘no way’ he would be offered a sum of ‘£700k-a-week’ if Steven Gerrard wasn’t managing in the Saudi Pro League.

The Liverpool legend wants to bring Jordan Henderson to Al Ettifaq, with the club and the player himself now having a big call to make.

But another Anfield hero in Nicol stated that, without their hard-hitting midfielder, Liverpool might never have won the Premier League title and Champions League under Jurgen Klopp, as he told ESPN.

The England international sat at the heart of the midfield and drove the team forward and through difficult times for many, many years.

That’s why Klopp entrusted him with the armband, as Nicol was having none of the verbal bashing the player was getting amid this talk of a possible move to Saudi.

“I am not a fan, I won’t lie,” said Laurens. “I like the leadership and I like the guy. I think he can thank Steven Gerrard massively because, if Steven Gerrard doesn’t go there as a manager, then there is no way they make an offer at £700k-a-week for Jordan Henderson.

“Have they even seen Jordan Henderson play football? £700k-a-week!? Have they seen him play? I mean, come on!?”

“Jules, Jules, I tell you what, that’s harsh,” Nicol told Laurnes. “Come on, he’s not Messi. That’s not my argument. My argument is what he did for Liverpool. Not everybody can be as silky as Messi or score a goal like Messi does. But there are all sorts of pieces to the puzzle.

“Without Jordan Henderson, then Liverpool might not win the Premier League or the Champions League. I think you are being harsh on him. But thank you, Steven Gerrard, you got that bit right.”

Henderson off the field

If this is the end of the road for Henderson, then he will leave a club legend and one of their greatest-ever captains.

It’s not on the field of play what will be missed the most, but what he provides around training on a daily basis and how he is in the changing rooms.

With James Milner having also left this summer, then that’s two big figures Klopp could lose from his dressing room, whilst one was planned, the other certainly wasn’t.
