Tony Cascarino says one-time Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Adama Traore is ‘one of the biggest enigmas’ in football after his exit from Wolves.

Well, officially, the Spain international is no longer a Wolves player and a free agent, but it doesn’t seem as though he has been officially released by the club, which leaves his door open.

It would be a surprise if he signed a new contract at Wolves, after all, only a number of months ago, Antonio Conte wanted him at Tottenham, as reported by 90Min.

But, for one reason or another, a move didn’t materialise, with Cascarino stating that, on his day, Adama Traore can be ‘one of the best players in the world’, as he told talkSPORT.

From coming through at Barcelona, playing for Aston Villa as a teenager, working under Tony Pulis, which led him to Wolves, back to Barcelona and now he has no official club to his name.

For many, it’s been a career that has, so far, been wasted by the 27-year-old, with Cascarino sharing his thoughts on the player.

“He’s one of the biggest enigmas in football,” said Cascarino. “He come from the Barcelona set-up and joined Aston Villa. Unbelievably quick. Never really got going. Never showed how good he could be at Villa.

“Went to Boro. He had periods there where he was devastating, then to Wolves, where he had a period where he looked so dangerous, then was out of the team.

“On his day, he is one of the best players in the world. Unfortunately, his days were few and far between because he had so much. Incredible power. Burst of pace. Direct. Never scored enough goals.

“He has everything – it just wasn’t like that week in and week out.”

Would Tottenham take Traore now?

Given that he is on a free, there isn’t any risk involved, in regards to a transfer fee, and that would work right down Daniel Levy’s alley.

Traore is a player that would lift up supporters and get a Tottenham fanbase excited by what he could provide.

But, in truth, he would just end up showcasing so much magic, with no end product, as his stats in the Premier League prove.

From his 194 games, he has scored ten goals and supplied 18 assists. Son Heung-min, in what was a poor season for him last time out, scored ten alone during the 2022/23 campaign, which says it all.
