Gary Rowett has suggested that Harry Maguire still wants to leave Manchester United amid suggestions that he won’t join West Ham United this summer.

The Millwall manager thinks the issues lie in finances where ‘everybody’ has to reach an agreement for the England centre-back to leave this summer.

West Ham have expressed a desire all summer to sign Harry Maguire and Rowett added that the Manchester United star ‘wants to play football’, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports News (15/08/23 at 7:10 pm).

Many will be questioning the latter and whether Maguire is actually thinking about his game time given the rumours that he will stay put at Old Trafford.

It’s pretty clear that he is a bench player, even on Monday night, when Man United beat Wolves 1-0, he was left on the bench by Erik ten Hag.

This despite the Man United manager making a half-time change by taking off Lisandro Martinez, but bringing on Victor Lindelof instead, with Rowett sharing his thoughts on the Maguire situation.

“I think the key behind it is that I am sure that Harry Maguire wants to play football, but obviously, he is also on a very big financial package at Manchester United,” said Rowett.

“When you hear that response that usually means that ‘I am not going to walk out easily’. I would imagine that’s the challenge. If a team like West Ham can’t pay the wages of Harry Maguire is on, so whatever fee they pay, then I would imagine, that it’s going towards subsidising that.

“I think that’s the challenge. I don’t think it’s whether Harry Maguire is going to be away from Manchester United or would want to play regular football. I am sure that’s the case.

“It will be, at one point, can someone reach an agreement that works for everybody. It seems as though that would be the best option. But sometimes in the modern day, as we know, it’s a big, big challenge to get to that point.”

Maguire is making a mistake

If he does indeed stay put, then he might just be making a very big mistake that could cost him in the long run.

With the likes of Levi Colwill coming through, it’s only a matter of time before he is picked for England, and if that happens, then that’s another person that could push ahead of Maguire on the international stage.

And if that happens, then by the time Euro 2024 comes along, Maguire could be sat at home, whilst his teammates are in Germany.
