Arsenal could turn to Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba as rumours over the future of Gabriel Magalhaes swirl.

Edmond Tapsoba could be back on Arsenal’s transfer radar amid news about Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhaes.

That is according to a report from The Express, who claim that Arsenal are now considering a defensive signing late in the transfer window.

Jurrien Timber suffered a major knee injury against Nottingham Forest on Saturday and is expected to miss most of the season.

The Dutchman’s versatility across the back was so important but he is now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Then there is the situation with Gabriel, who was curiously dropped from the starting lineup against Forest.

The Mirror then reported that Gabriel is wanted in Saudi Arabia and Arsenal are aware of the potential move.

That means Arsenal are now looking into signing another defender with Tapsoba understood to be high on the list of targets alongside Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi.

Arsenal target Edmond Tapsoba was wanted by Tottenham Hotspur this summer

Tapsoba, 24, has excelled in the Bundesliga since joining Leverkusen from Vitoria Guimaraes back in January 2020.

A tall defender at 6ft 4in tall, Tapsoba has shown off his pace as well as his ability to carry the ball out from the back.

The Burkina Faso ace has impressed so much that he has now become a prime Premier League transfer target.

Fabrizio Romano reported in July that Tottenham Hotspur considered Tapsoba to be their top defensive target for the summer.

Romano had also claimed in June that Arsenal wanted Tapsoba but considered him ‘too expensive’ as Edu and co backed away.

The situation has changed now though as Tottenham have instead signed Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg and Arsenal may have a clear run at signing Tapsoba.

The Gunners would still need to find the cash but maybe selling Folarin Balogun – and Gabriel – would help fund a move.

Tapsoba – hailed as a ‘fantastic’ player by Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes – doesn’t have Timber’s versatility and isn’t left-footed like Gabriel, but is clearly a defender Arsenal like and he could come into focus very soon.
